Vandalism Shuts Kirkoswald Bridge

evlemoticon 300x300 Vandalism Shuts Kirkoswald BridgeAn act of mindless vandalism – is there any other kind? –  has resulted in the closure of the bridge over the River Eden between Kirkoswald and Lazonby. The bridge was damaged before Christmas and last week work was started to repair the stonework and traffic lights were installed to protect the workforce.

On night, I think it was Tuesday, some cretin smashed the traffic lights and pushed some of the repaired stonework into the river with the result that some of the 200 year old sandstone will be lost forever and when the bridge is repaired it will lose its original look.

Worst still is that access to the bridge has been completely closed and people from the KO side of the river wanting to get to Lazonby or Penrith have to detour around Langwathby or Armathwaite, a trip of around eight or nine miles. This state of affairs is likely to last up to two weeks.

I have a suspicion who is responsible so will be contacting the police tomorrow. On a historical note the bridge is often called Lazonby bridge but it was paid for by farmers from the Kirkoswald side of the river so they could get their livestock to the sales in Lazonby.

Vampires And Monsters In Eden

Regardless of what you might think of your neighbours’ children, there are real horror and monster stories from the Eden Valley! Perhaps the most famous is that of the Croglin Vampire which is reported in some depth at Mysterious Britain. In short the Fisher family rented out their house to two brothers and a sister,…

Kirkoswald Store Reopens

The village shop in Kirkoswald has been re-branded and re-opened as Ravenbridge Stores following a closure of around two years.  The store closed after the previous owner had to hand over the keys for reasons which have been covered elsewhere and there’s little point in digging up sad stories. It was bought and refurbished by…

Going Off-Piste & Off The Beaten Track–Recommended

Most of the time in the “day job” I am surgically attached to a computer or stuck in meetings (sounds familiar?) but earlier this week I got the opportunity to drive down to Sedbergh and Garsdale. What I do if I have the time is to go off-piste and take off up random turnings and…

Orton Farmers’ Market Shows How It Should Be Done

Orton Farmers Market grew out of the stench and the horror that was foot and mouth in 2001 and has established itself as the pioneer of a resurgent interest in quality food sourced from reliable, sustainable sources. Orton Farmers’ Ltd (- the tradeing name – is a member of FARMA and operates within their guidelines. …

Skelton Personifies What Local Shows Should Be

Yesterday saw a classic Skelton Show, an event which typifies what a local agricultural show is all about – the locals.  OK, there was a large marquee from the Yorkshire Clothing Company selling a comprehensive range of hats, coats,m sweaters etc but, by and large, the majority of stalls were local companies and organisations. Too…

Kamikaze Coast To Coasters A Pain InThe …

I can understand the challenge of the Coast To Coast cycle challenge and I feel a deep sympathy for those poor souls whose faces turn ashen when they see the climb  to Hartside. Most coast to coasters I meet are great people, but that is not always the case. My route home takes in some…

Country Living Is Quiet-The Hell It Is!

There is a misconception among town and city dwellers that it is quiet living in the country. While I am reluctant to disavow this impression it is, how can I put this delicately, a load of bollocks! Rural life is certainly less frenetic than living in London or any other major urban conurbation but it…

Lapwings And Little Owls, Gains And Losses

I am not a twitcher – that’s nickname for fanatical birdwatchers who will go to any lengths to “tick off” seeing a specific bird in their must have logbook, but I do enjoy watching the activities and antics of our avian friends. I have a few bird feeders in the garden and get visits from…
